Besides the already existing Friends Groups in a number of larger parks we are in the early stages of setting up Northampton Open Spaces Volunteers to support residents who wish to care for our smaller open spaces.
There are two aspects to this volunteer role;
The first, which we ask all volunteers to do, is to report any major problems that need to be dealt with by the Borough Council Street Cleaning, such as fly-tipping, major litter problems, grass cutting etc.,
The second, which is optional, is to fix any problems that fall within your own ability – in general we want you to see your street and other open spaces as an extension of your garden, not to carry out major works but to keep it tidy by dealing with minor problems. If unsure whether you should undertake a particular task you can talk it over with the co-ordinator.
Although there is no real risk to what we ask you to do, as part of an information manual, we will be providing risk assessments for various tasks and also public liability insurance. You will probably find that your household insurance provides you with additional cover.
As part of our ongoing support we will arrange regular newsletters and meeting so that you can meet with other volunteers and discuss any items of concern. If you wish we will also put you in touch with other volunteers in your area.
As funds become available we will provide litter pickers, gloves, tabard etc. for those who require them.
